Pictures from Healthy Living Day are here. We had a new maple products vendor, Folsom's Sugar House from Chester, trying the market out. Also, not pictured, was the new fitness center going in at the Northwood Garage complex.
Another lovely summer day.

Passport to NH Bounty
New Hampshire Eat Local Month, celebrated throughout August, is a collaboration of the NH Department of Agriculture, Markets, and Food and dozens of businesses, individuals, and groups throughout the state. New this year is the Passport to Local Farms Weekend, August 28-29. Passport to Local Farms is a statewide open house including almost 60 participating farms.
The event is interactive and invites visitors to obtain an official "passport" to collect stamps at each farm visited during that weekend. Those who collect four or more stamps are eligible to submit their passports for a prize drawing in September. Many of these farms will include free samples and opportunities to purchase NH grown fruits, veggies, dairy and more!
It's easy to get started. Click for a Passport and a list of some of the great raffle prizes.

National Farmers Market Week!
I am so glad I found this.
Whichever market I go to, I always run into several friends, either shopping or selling, and I come home in a better mood than when I left -- something I cannot say about supermarket shopping.
I'm in a rut, though, with my farmers market routine. I know what I like, who I like to buy it from, and I head straight for those stands. So this year, I'm going to celebrate National Farmers Market Week by forcing myself out of my vegetable comfort zone.Come visit us tomorrow afternoon, try an old favorite or try something new!

Local food is too expensive?
Sometimes we hear that we can buy produce at the supermarket so much cheaper than at the farmers market or through a CSA or even a farm stand. But think about this.
At the CSA, I pay $12 / week and average about 4.5lbs of produce making my pound for pound cost around $2.75. This mostly meets my needs for an entire week. I bring my own bags and there is, obviously, no packaging involved. My farmer picks the produce fresh the day before our pickup. Items last about 2 weeks in my refrigerator. (My emphasis)Produce shipped to a supermarket may be a week away from harvest, and have endured who knows what conditions on its way to you. I have been absolutely amazed at how long my veggies last in the refrigerator when I buy them from our farmers market. I waste so much less. Of course, there is a lot less going in the composter, but that's OK, there's always something like peels.
